Chinese Hurdler Under Fire for Excessive Focus on Appearance Amid Poor Performance

Daniel Kim Views

Chinese track star Wu Yanni faces criticism after her disappointing performance at the Diamond League Competition held in Xiamen, on the southeastern coast of China, on the 20th. Wu finished the women’s 100m hurdles with a lackluster time of 13.04 seconds, prompting Chinese netizens to link her poor performance to her excessive investment in appearance.

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), on the 7th, Wu wore flashy star-shaped makeup and a noticeably revealing outfit during the race.

Wu’s start was not impressive, and she fell behind her competitors before clearing the first hurdle.

She tried to catch up with the rest of the competitors but ended up finishing in a disappointing tenth place.

After the race, Wu admitted that the competitors were too fast. Her start wasn’t good, so she lost her rhythm, and it was too late to catch up.

However, netizens believe her poor performance is associated with her preoccupation with her appearance. One netizen commented, “Fans came to watch your race, not your looks. They highly value the process and results.”

According to Vietnamese media outlet VN Express, many Weibo users criticized Wu for wearing heavy makeup, necklaces, rings, bracelets, watches, manicures, and false eyelashes during the Diamond League period. Netizens also pointed out that she wore a tight dress that exposed her back during the competition.

Despite the criticism, Wu still ranks 39th globally and holds the highest ranking among Chinese athletes in the women’s 100m hurdles.

Last August, Wu secured her ticket to the Paris Olympics by winning a silver medal at the FISU World University Games (formerly Universiade) held in Chengdu, southwestern China, with a time of 12.76 seconds in the women’s 100m hurdles. However, she was disqualified for a false start at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, eastern Zhejiang province, on October 1st last year.
