Trump and Biden in Tight Battle Despite Legal Woes

Daniel Kim Views

Ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November, former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump was convicted in a hush-money case last month. CBS News reported on the 9th that he is still neck and neck with President Joe Biden despite this.

CBS and YouGov conducted a poll, interviewing 2063 voters nationwide from the 5th to the 7th, about their support for the November election. The margin of error is ±3.2 percentage points for all adults and ±3.8 percentage points for registered voters.

Among the intended voters, 50% supported Trump, while Biden’s support was 1% point lower, at 49%.

However, in swing states such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, Biden’s approval rating was 50%, 1% point higher than Trump.

Until now, Trump has led nationwide and swung state polls against Biden. Although he has taken the lead in this poll in the swing states, the 1% difference is within the margin of error.

CBS analyzed that a significant number of Trump’s supporters saw his conviction on the 30th of last month as not serious and politically motivated. Regarding whether this conviction would influence the election vote, 55% answered it was not a factor. Only 28% said it was a major factor, and 17% said it was a minor factor.

CBS explained, “Among all the factors on voters’ minds this election, former President Donald Trump’s guilty verdict pales compared to issues like the economy, inflation, and the border — all items on which Trump maintains advantages. As such, the verdict has not dramatically reshaped the race.”

Trump was also found to be superior to Biden in various qualities, being seen as compelling, strong, energetic, and competent, and more people believed that Trump had the vision to lead the country.

On the other hand, many Biden supporters cited their opposition to Trump as their main reason for support, not because of their fondness for Biden.
