Putin and Kim Jong Un Aim to Sidestep U.S. Dollar in Trade Talks

Yonhap News

Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated through a contribution to North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun that he will “develop a trade and mutual payment system that is not controlled by the West and jointly oppose unilateral, illegal restrictions.”

In his article, published on the 18th, titled “Russia and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea: Continuing the Tradition of Solidarity, Friendship, and Cooperation,” Putin wrote, “We will build an architecture of equal and indivisible security in Eurasia.” At the invitation of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Putin is visiting North Korea for a two-day official visit from the published date.

Putin’s remarks are interpreted as Russia and North Korea’s intention to establish their own trade and payment system without the influence of the US dollar. China also promotes the Organization to counter the dollar in international trade settlements.

Putin emphasized his willingness to continue supporting North Korea and closely cooperate to make international relations more democratic and stable.

He added that to achieve this, plans include constructing an equal and indivisible security structure in Eurasia, developing humanitarian cooperation, revitalizing scientific activities between North Korean and Russian higher education institutions, and promoting mutual tourism, cultural and educational exchanges, and youth and sports exchanges.

These matters are expected to be included in the comprehensive strategic partnership agreement that Putin and Kim will sign. Previously, Putin’s aide for foreign affairs, Yury Ushakov, mentioned the possibility of Putin signing a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement with Kim in Pyongyang.
