President Joe Biden has raised his voice against politics becoming a literal battlefield in the wake of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

According to CNBC on the 14th (local time), Biden, in a national address from his office at the White House, condemned the violence related to the assassination attempt on Trump and urged American citizens to calm the heated political discourse.

“Disagreement is inevitable in American democracy. It’s part of human nature,” Biden said. “But politics must never be a literal battlefield. And, God forbid, a killing field.”

“The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It’s time to cool it down,” he said.

Biden also mentioned not only the shooting incident involving Trump on that day but also the attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, and other related incidents.

“Yesterday’s shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania calls on all of us to take a step back, take stock of where we are, how we go forward from here…Unity is the most elusive goal of all, but nothing is important than that right now – unity,” he told the nation.

He emphasized that concepts such as American democracy, decency, dignity, and fair play are not merely quaint notions but are living, breathing realities. He continued, urging, “Look, let’s never lose sight of who we are. Let’s remember we are the United States of America.”

This is Biden’s third address from his office since taking office. He stated that the motive of the shooting is still unknown.

The day before, a shooting incident occurred at the election rally site of Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. The shooter, a 20-year-old man residing in Pennsylvania, was killed at the scene. Also, one audience member was killed, and two were seriously injured in the incident. Trump was also wounded above his right ear. He arrived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to attend the Republican National Convention, which begins on the 15th.
