CNN reported on Sunday that a shooting incident took place in the bustling area, resulting in the deaths of at least four people, including three men and one woman, and injuring 18 others.

According to local police, just after 11 PM on Saturday, multiple assailants arrived in a vehicle at Five Points South in Birmingham, Alabama, exited the car, opened fire, and then fled the scene in the same vehicle.

Authorities believe the shooters specifically targeted certain individuals. They suspect one of the victims was the intended target and are collaborating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other agencies to track down the perpetrators.

Reportedly, shooters implanted an illegal modification device known as a switch, which is illegal to own, to their weapons to fire a volley like a machine gun.

When police responded to the scene, they discovered over 100 shell casings.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin expressed concern about the level of gun violence in the city, describing it as an “epidemic.”

“I want to work with the state to solve this problem,” he said. “Our focus and our priority is literally the shooter or shooters who committed this heinous crime – to make sure we can take them off the street.”

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris expressed their condolences to the victims of this incident.

Stef Feldman, the director of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, stated, “President Biden and Vice President Harris join Americans across the nation in praying for the families affected by this senseless violence.”

She also emphasized, “Americans should not have to live like this. And we can’t let it become normal.”
