Paternal tests are spreading like wildfire in China. The trend has been fueled by recent news from various parts of China that the children they have been raising are not their biological offspring.

According to local media on the 12th (local time), paternal tests are rapidly spreading in China. Although the test cost is considered high in China at $157 to $204, demand for the tests is not decreasing.

According to Hunan Xinhuanet, on the 4th, a couple in Nanchong, Sichuan Province, China, faced divorce after seven years of marriage. The couple’s five-year-old son was found not to be biologically related to his father.

After the divorce, the father gained custody of the son. However, the mother took the son away, telling her mother-in-law, “He is not your family.” A test confirmed no biological relationship between the father and son.

Such cases are not uncommon in China. According to another local media outlet, Guangming Net, a couple in Jiangxi province caused a nationwide shock at the end of last year when it was revealed that all three of their daughters, born during their 16 years of marriage, were not the man’s biological children. The couple married in 2007 and had their first child in 2008 and second and third children in 2010 and 2018, respectively. The husband, who had to work in another city to earn a living, came home only once or twice a month. However, in February 2022, he discovered through a location tracking app that his wife was in a different area, not home, and confirmed that she had spent the night at a hotel with another man. He then started to suspect that his youngest daughter did not resemble him and had a genetic test done, which revealed the fact.

The number of paternity test requests in China is estimated to reach hundreds of thousands annually. The frequency of cases discovering that the tested child is not the biological child is also increasing in China.

As paternity tests become popular, there are also cases of fraud exploiting this. On the 7th, Hunan Xinhuanet reported a case where the Huanghuai Forensic Center conducted a paternity test to launder the identity of a child illegally trafficked by Mr. and Mrs. Wang as their own. The couple was caught after they dressed their biological son in a skirt and had him undergo a paternity test to register the trafficked girl as their own.
