North Korea’s Kim Jong Un Redefines Leadership: Praised as ‘Sun of Juche Chosun’

Changed the Terminology for the Birthday of Kim Il Sung From Day of the Sun to 4.15

Instead of renaming the official name for Kim Il Sung’s birthday from Day of the Sun to 4.15, North Korea is working to strengthen Kim Jong Un’s status by describing him as our great father.

This year, the Rodong Sinmun used the term 4.15 instead of the usual Day of the Sun for Kim Il Sung’s birthday(April 15) and praised Kim Jong Un as the Sun of Juche Chosun. Neither Kim nor the leading executives paid tribute to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, where Kim Il Sung’s body lies in state.

The Rodong Sinmun also described Kim Jong Un as our great father in an article on the completion ceremony of the second phase of the Hwasong District on the 16th, praising him as the father of destiny, which means a being who shares fate with the people.

On the 18th, a government official from the South Korean Ministry of Unification analyzed that “Looking at recent circumstances, it seems more likely to be part of an effort to independently strengthen Kim Jong Un’s status, rather than trying to escape the mystique of Kim Il Sung-Kim Jong Il or pursue a normal state.”

In addition, he said, “Unusually, there is no report on the visit to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun for the first time, and considering these circumstances, we are looking at the possibility of that happening.”.

At the celebration performance for the completion of the houses, instead of the previous Familiar Name, the new song Familiar Father was introduced, and Let’s Sing Our Leader Kim Jong Il was changed to Let’s Sing Our Guide Kim Jong Un.

Also, The Dear Name Kim Jong Il was changed to The Dear Father Kim Jong Il.

Professor Kang Dong Wan of Dong-A University analyzed, “After first playing the new song Familiar Father, which has a similar structure to Familiar Name, a song symbolizing Kim Jong Il, and then singing the new national anthem, it is clear that it is a deliberate production to show the consolidation of Kim Jong Un’s power.”.

In addition, “The fact that this completion ceremony was held right after Kim Il Sung’s birthday on April 4 15 can be interpreted as an intention to surpass the authority of Kim Il Sung-Kim Jong Il.”

Meanwhile, it was confirmed that North Korea changed the lyrics of Three Thousand Ri in the North Korean national anthem to This World during the performance. Also, the original National Anthem was renamed to the National Anthem of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

This change in the national anthem lyrics seems to be a follow-up measure to Kim Jong Un’s instruction to remove expressions such as independence, peaceful reunification, and national solidarity from the constitution in his policy speech at the 10th meeting of the 14th session of the Supreme People’s Assembly held in January this year.
