EU Targets Meta: Possible Fines for Child Safety Violations on Social Platforms

Daniel Kim Views

Meta may face fines due to violations of the European Union (EU) content regulations.

On the 16th (local time), the EU regulatory authority announced that social media sites Facebook and Instagram, platforms of Meta will be investigated for potential violations of EU online content rules related to child safety.

Tech companies must make more efforts to address illegal and harmful content on their platforms under the EU’s main Digital Services Act (DSA).

The EU Commission decided to initiate a thorough investigation due to concerns that Facebook and Instagram failed to appropriately address the risks to children, and Meta submitted a risk assessment report last September.

In a statement from the EU Commission, they showed concern about systems including the algorithms of Facebook and Instagram, which not only stimulate addictive behavior in children but also make them susceptible to a hyperreal state.

The Commission also expressed concerns about the age assurance and verification methods implemented by Meta.

On the other hand, Meta is already attracting the EU’s attention over election misinformation ahead of the crucial European Parliament elections next month. Additionally, violations of the DSA can result in fines of up to 6% of the company’s total annual sales.
