President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has invited the leaders of the United States and China to a Ukrainian peace summit set to take place in Switzerland next month.

According to the Associated Press (AP) on the 26th (local time), President Zelenskyy said in a video message, “I appeal to world leaders, specifically President Joe Biden of the United States and President Xi Jinping of China, who are yet to participate in the global efforts of the World Peace Summit,” urging them to “support the Peace Summit through their leadership and participation.”

President Zelenskyy emphasized that the presence of these two leaders is crucial for fulfilling the summit’s goals. He also stressed that he wanted “leaders who Russia will not be able to deceive.” The summit will take place over two days, starting on the 15th, at a luxury resort near Lucerne, Switzerland. The Swiss government has agreed to host the meeting in response to Ukraine’s request.

According to the organizers, the participants include 160 countries, including members of the Group of Seven (G7), G20, and BRICS. President Zelenskyy stated, “Over 80 countries have confirmed their attendance, and Ukraine is continually working to invite more leaders.” Whether President Biden will attend is yet to be determined. The attendance of President Xi Jinping, who invited Russian President Vladimir Putin for a state visit this month, is also uncertain. Russia will not attend. Earlier this month, President Putin remarked he had not been invited and said, “I will not attend an event where I am not welcome.”
