Reports indicate that Russia has developed a technique to attack Starlink signals.
A repeated occurrence has been reported in partial areas of Ukraine, where the speed of Starlink signals used by the Ukrainian military has slowed down, or there has been some data loss.
This did not occur at the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war, leading security experts to conclude that Russia has, although not perfectly, developed a method to attack Starlink signals.
In a recent interview with Ukrainian broadcast Radio NV, Serhiy Beskrestnov, a reserve officer and expert in radio transmissions, noted that while there are no instances of complete communication shutdowns or total data loss, changes in speed, communication delays, and the loss of some data packets have been observed.
“It is not happening everywhere, just in spots. We are collaborating with SpaceX to identify and neutralize these issues,” he added.
Previously, the New York Times reported on May 24 that a Starlink connection failure occurred in Ukraine’s Kharkiv Oblast as Russia launched a new offensive.
This connection failure reportedly impacted the Ukrainian military’s plans to attack Russian forces using drones and also affected the communication of some Ukrainian soldiers.
Kari A. Bingen, a former Pentagon official and electronic warfare expert, suggested, “Starlink and other satellite communications could be disrupted by the use of a high-power radio frequency to overwhelm the connection links.”
She noted, “The invisible attacks are typically done from a vehicle with a large radio tower attached to the top.”
Other experts also suggested the possibility that Russia could be using special electronic weapons mounted on drones to interfere with the GPS signals used by Starlink.
