China and U.S. Tie for Gold, But China Claims Top Spot with 40 Medals

Daniel Kim Views

China is celebrating its impressive achievement at the Paris Summer Olympics. Its national team secured 40 gold medals, tying with the United States for the top spot. Some Chinese media outlets even declared that China and the U.S. won a joint victory. Chinese social media platforms are abuzz with expressions of pride and patriotism as fans celebrate the athletes’ remarkable performance.

The Chinese delegation’s achievements at the Paris Summer Olympics were indeed remarkable. Given the U.S.’s exceptional skill and performance, it’s notable that China tied the U.S. in gold medals by the end of the games. However, China technically finished second overall because it fell behind the U.S. in silver and bronze medals. Furthermore, China’s claim of a joint victory might be somewhat inflated, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not officially rank countries by total medal counts.

Nonetheless, there’s no need to downplay the achievements or excitement surrounding the Chinese team’s performance. One can argue that the number of gold medals won is the most that China has ever won at an Olympics held outside its territory. Given this fact, it’s understandable that the Chinese Communist Party congratulated the nation’s athletes, praising them for inspiring patriotism among Chinese people at home and abroad.

According to a report by the state-run Xinhua News Agency yesterday, the Party expressed in the message sent the previous day that “At the 33rd Summer Olympics, China’s athletes fought tenaciously and with great determination. They lived up to their mission by winning 40 gold medals, 27 silver medals, and 24 bronze medals, bringing honor to the nation.” They added, “The Party Central Committee and the State Council extend their congratulations.”

The message highlighted that “The athletes strongly embodied the spirit of sports and the Olympic ethos while securing gold medals with honor. Their dedication and exceptional skills have marked a new era for Chinese sports.” It also asserted, “Your outstanding achievements have sparked patriotism among Chinese youth both domestically and internationally, fostering a sense of national unity.”

Given its capabilities, China will likely compete with the U.S. for the top spot again at the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Objectively, the U.S. is expected to have a significant advantage due to the home advantage. However, the sentiment on social media, particularly among the younger generation, is different. Many claim that China will secure first place. The Paris Summer Olympics seem to have reignited patriotic fervor among Chinese people, especially the younger generation.
