Hyundai will provide its North American electric vehicle customers with a dedicated adapter for Tesla Supercharger use. This will improve the customers’ electric vehicle ownership experience by creating a large-scale charging network, including approximately 17,000 Superchargers across the US.

Following the adoption of Tesla’s charging method at the Hyundai Motor Group, Kia has decided to provide a dedicated adapter for Superchargers. Hyundai’s premium brand Genesis also plans to offer a dedicated adapter for Superchargers.

According to Hyundai Motor America (HMA) on December 24, 2024, starting in the first quarter of 2025, Tesla’s dedicated charger connection method (North American Charging Standard, NACS) dedicated adapter will be provided free of charge to customers purchasing electric vehicles (including leases) in North America. Applications can be made through the brand’s dedicated application (app), My Hyundai. HMA will also cover the shipping cost. The models that come with the NACS adapter are the 2024-25 Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Kona EV. However, the 2025 Ioniq 5 does not require a separate NACS adapter as it is the first electric vehicle model of the brand to introduce the J3400 charging port. The same goes for the Ioniq 9, a large electric sports utility vehicle (SUV) scheduled to be launched in the first half of 2025.

J3400 is a charging connector for NACS. If equipped with J3400, you can use the Supercharger without the MagicDock. The MagicDock tool helps charge electric vehicles that use the Combined Charging System (CCS) by connecting to the Supercharger charger.

Olabisi Boyle, head of product planning and mobility strategy at Hyundai Motor America (HMA), explained that the decision to provide a dedicated NACS adapter aligns with the brand’s electrification strategy. She also mentioned that an announcement regarding a plan to offer a dedicated NACS adapter for Genesis customers would be made soon.

HMA’s plan to provide NACS-only adapters follows Hyundai Motor Group’s adoption of Tesla charging in October 2023. Before HMA, Kia Motors America (KA) also announced plans to offer NACS adapters free of charge starting in January 2025. The J3400 charging port will be introduced to the 2025 EV6 model.

Genesis also plans to provide NACS adapters in the first half of 2025. The J3400 charging port will be installed starting with the 2026 GV70 electric facelift model. It will be located on the upper right side of the front grille, the same as before.

Meanwhile, as of September 2023, Tesla has exceeded 50,000 superchargers installed in the global electric vehicle market. The number of superchargers, which started with six in 2012, has increased to 50,000 in just over 10 years. Tesla has adjusted its supercharger installation target upward and plans to install an additional 50,000 units within five years.
