According to local Chinese media on Thursday, Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory in China could be completed within this year, seven months after the groundbreaking ceremony.

In May, Tesla signed a procurement contract with Lingang Group for Testhe la Megapack, China’s first large-scale commercial energy storage system. The Shanghai Megafactory will start operating in the first quarter of next year and will produce 10,000 units of large-scale commercial energy storage systems, or Megapacks, annually. The total storage capacity is approximately 40 gigawatts. This Megapack will be supplied to global markets.

Tesla’s Megapack features a storage capacity of over 3.9 megawatts per unit. This can supply power to 3,600 households for one hour, significantly impacting power stability in large cities. It can also be used as a city power storage tank in various areas where the power supply in large cities is unstable.

Tesla’s China Shanghai Megafactory is the company’s first energy storage facility outside the U.S. If the Chinese-made Megapacks are supplied to the Asia-Pacific region, Tesla will secure a major foothold for global expansion in the energy storage sector.

Meanwhile, the Shanghai Gigafactory, adjacent to the Shanghai Megafactory, has already surpassed 950,000 units in annual pure electric vehicle production capacity. It serves as a key export hub for Tesla’s global production network. Expectations are high for how the Shanghai Megafactory ripple effect will affect the stability of electric vehicle power supply.
