Following the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter on Sunday, leaders from various sectors, including current and former presidents, have expressed their condolences.

President Joe Biden said, “Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian.” He emphasized Carter’s dedication to fighting disease, fostering peace, advancing civil and human rights, and advocating for society’s most vulnerable with compassion and moral clarity. Biden stated that former President Carter had transformed lives worldwide. To honor him, he directed that Carter’s funeral be held as a state funeral in Washington, D.C.

President-elect Donald Trump shared his thoughts on Truth Social, “The challenges Jimmy faced as president came at a pivotal time for our country, and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans.” Trump expressed gratitude and condolences to Carter’s family, saying, “Only we can relate to the enormous responsibility of leading the Greatest Nation in History.” In a subsequent post, Trump acknowledged, “While I strongly disagreed with him philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved and respected our Country and all it stands for. He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that, I give him my highest respect.”

Other former U.S. presidents also issued statements of remembrance. Former President Obama said he “taught all of us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice, and service.” Former Presidents First Lady Bill and Hillary Clinton wrote that Carter “worked tirelessly for a better, fairer world.” Former President George W. Bush emphasized, “His work with Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Center set an example of service that will inspire Americans for generations.”
