Kuhl, a Japanese tuning specialist, has wrapped off its latest wide-body kits for two of Japan’s most iconic sports cars: the Nissan Fairlady Z and the Toyota GR Supra. These custom kits, inspired by the Showa era and Japan’s drift car culture, infuse the vehicles with a new level of aggression and style, with influences from the country’s unique Bosozoku (biker gang) tuning scene.

The two modified models, unveiled at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, immediately caught attention. The Nissan Fairlady Z won the grand prize in the custom car contest. Kuhl began developing the kits about a year ago and completed them just in time for the event.

Nissan Fairlady Z: Reborn with the Spec-D Kit

For the Fairlady Z, Kuhl developed the “Spec-D” wide-body kit. This kit features ultra-wide fenders and bold matte black bolt-on extensions, adding 80 mm (3.1 inches) on each side for a more aggressive stance. It also includes custom front and rear bumpers, a large bonnet, splitter, and rear wing, transforming the vehicle into a time-attack monster.

One of the standout features of the Spec-D kit is the quad tailpipes, arranged in a “bamboo spear” style that recalls the look of traditional Japanese bamboo spears. The car sits on 19-inch forged two-piece Verz Krone 04 wheels, and the low, aggressive stance is completed with Air Force Super Performance suspension.

Toyota GR Supra: A Bold New Look with the Spec-D Kit

The Toyota GR Supra also dramatically transforms with Kuhl’s Spec-D kit. Described as “very controversial” by Kuhl, the design adopts a sharp and bold style, drawing inspiration from OreDa! The racing team’s GR Supra competes in the D1GP drift series.

The front end is reworked with angular air intakes, a large splitter, and integrated canards, while the bulging bonnet adds to the car’s racing appeal. The side features bold fender extensions with vents that evoke the look of a Le Mans race car. At the rear, a large spoiler and roof wing maximize aerodynamic performance, while the sharp rear bumper, diffuser, and quad tailpipes further enhance the aggressive aesthetic.

The GR Supra: A Custom Order Option from Kuhl

Although the GR Supra is no longer available for new vehicle purchases in Japan, it can still be custom-ordered through Kuhl. Customers can choose from complete vehicles based on used models or individual parts to tailor their builds. The GR Supra, finished in Kuhl’s signature Elegant Gold color (the same as the Fairlady Z Spec-D at the Tokyo Auto Salon), is priced at over 10 million yen (approximately $63,977) in Japan.

Kuhl’s wide-body kits for the Fairlady Z and GR Supra boldly reinvent two of Japan’s most beloved sports cars. They combine aggressive styling with performance-enhancing modifications, showcasing the vibrant tuning culture shaping Japan’s automotive landscape.
