Lin Jian, the new spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, first appeared at a regular briefing and stated, “China strongly opposes Korea inviting Taiwanese authorities to the so-called Democracy Summit.” He continued, “There is only ‘One China’ in the world. Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory. The People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing all of China.” He added, “No external force has succeeded in interfering in China’s internal affairs or supporting Taiwanese independence.”

He also stated, “China urges Korea to adhere to the ‘One China’ principle. We also demand that they stop providing a platform for Taiwanese independence forces”. After expressing this firm stance, he claimed, “The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities in Taiwan cannot deceive the world with their scheme to expand the space for Taiwanese independence activities under the banner of democracy and human rights. They can only bring humiliation upon themselves and are bound to fail”.

According to diplomatic sources in Beijing on the 18th, the third Democracy Summit is expected to be held in Seoul for three days starting the 18th. The program includes ministerial meetings, civil society events, and virtual summits. A Taiwanese delegation could attend, considering the schedule. However, considering various circumstances, China’s demands are expected to be accepted.

In addition to this, Lin Jian also commented on North Korea’s launch of a short-range ballistic missile into the East Sea that morning, saying, “China has paid attention to the related reports. We have also noticed the joint military exercises targeted at North Korea conducted by Korea and the U.S. previously”, connecting the two issues. He added, “China believes that maintaining peace and stability on the peninsula is in the common interest of all parties.” His statement seemed to speak up for North Korea.
