According to the Taipei Times on the 12th, a Taiwanese influencer known as Mr. R, who has 160,000 followers, announced on his social media on the 10th at 11 p.m. that he would be scattering 1,000 Taiwan dollars (equivalent to $30.84) of cash in the Xinyi District of Taipei.

The news quickly spread on social media, drawing about 3,000 people to the scene. In a video uploaded to social media from the event, Mr. R can be seen spraying bills into the crowd with a spray gun while people were reaching out their hands, each hoping to grab the money.

As a large crowd gathered, the scene turned into chaos. Many people fell and were trampled as they reached forward to grab the money.

According to a report by Newsis, witnesses at the scene said, “Many people fell and were injured,” and “It could have been a major disaster like the Itaewon tragedy in South Korea in 2022.”

Upon receiving a report, the police arrived at the scene, halted the event, and dispersed the crowd. Mr. R, who led the event, appeared at the police station the next day and apologized, saying, “I didn’t know that so many people would gather,” and “I’m sorry for causing inconvenience.”

The police sent Mr. R to the prosecutor’s office for failing to report the event and taking safety precautions in advance.
