Is South Korea Mishandling North Korea’s Provocations?

Yonhap News

Recently, Kim Byung Joo, a member of the Democratic Party, strongly criticized the South Korean government’s response to North Korea’s repeated provocations with waste balloons.

On the 10th, Kim criticized the government on CBS Radio‘s Kim Hyun Jung’s News Show for ordering all military personnel to work normally over the weekend, saying, “They forced all soldiers to work in a very irrational and abnormal way.”

As a former general, Kim questioned, “When we say emergency duty, don’t we strengthen our defense posture and take corresponding measures?”

He pointed out, “Instead of that, the government notified all personnel to come to work like a weekday around 11 PM on Saturday, and all soldiers just worked normally. It’s very abnormal. There’s no precedent for this.”

Kim also criticized, “What happened after the first round of balloons? Didn’t the president go to the People Power Party’s dinner and say he felt good after drinking beer and throwing an uppercut? By then, the government had already ordered the military to refrain from drinking.”

He continued, “Pure water flows from a pure spring. What did they do when the second round of filth balloons came over? The commander of the 1st Division, who should have been best prepared at the forefront, was dismissed for drinking.”

He speculated, “When the third round of balloons came over, I even considered the thought of ‘What if there’s an accident while they’re drinking? That’s why they made all soldiers work regular hours.’ I think the recent accidents happening in the military are somewhat related to that.”

Kim criticized the government’s response to North Korea, saying, “If the government can shoot down and block the balloons, North Korea won’t send rubber balloons anymore. But that’s not happening and they’re just letting things happen, so North Korea sends balloons freely now.”

He pointed out, “The Yoon Suk Yeol government’s absurdity is that they didn’t fire a single shot. It is not the national military to mention that they could not respond with a worry that the bullet might cross over to North Korea.”

He analyzed, “North Korea has found our weak point this time, and even if they don’t use it now, they’ll think it’s effective during a war. They might have found out that they can also attach biochemical weapons or bombs on the balloons.”

Kim also commented on the loudspeaker card against North Korea that the government has brought up, saying, “North Korea is indeed sensitive about it, but the government is overestimating how sensitive North Korea would react. When I was a corps commander at the forefront, North Korea had developed countermeasures.”

He explained, “They turn the direction of broadcasting against South Korea around their independent barracks and some play outdoor loudspeakers by the picket, so when South Korea plays its broadcast, they also play their broadcast so that North Korean soldiers can’t hear it.”

Kim predicted, “They’ll do the same this time and have more evolved countermeasures.”

Regarding North Korea’s mention of a new response and raising the threat level, he predicted that they might try something that could disrupt South Korean society, such as a cyber attack on our banks or computer systems when it would be ambiguous to respond militarily.

He criticized the government by stating, “If the South Korean government keeps going like this without using a brake, they’ll face many crises. The Yoon Suk Yeol government should look at this from a crisis management perspective, but they seem to lack it.”
