Chinese Coast Guard Saves Filipinos Amid South China Sea Tensions

Daniel Kim Views

Xinhua, China’s state-run news agency, reported that the Chinese Coast Guard rescued two Filipino sailors who had a ship accident near the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, where China and the Philippines are disputing sovereignty.

The incident occurred on the 29th of last month when a Filipino ship passed through Scarborough Shoal in the area where its engine failed. The engine soon exploded after being caught in fire, injuring two sailors on board and causing water to flood the ship.

The China Coast Guard, which happened to be patrolling the area, immediately launched a rescue operation. Xinhua explained, “Rescuers threw life jackets and buoys to save the sailors,” and “The China Coast Guard immediately informed the Philippine government of the situation, and the Philippines expressed gratitude for China’s assistance.”

On the 17th of last month, China and the Philippines had a confrontation at the Second Thomas Shoal in the South China Sea, where a Filipino navy ship was attacked. This resulted in injuries, including a Filipino soldier’s finger being cut off. Since then, the tensions between the two countries have escalated to a climax, including a harsh war of words.
