South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will visit Peru and Brazil to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the Group of Twenty (G20) summits, respectively. He will meet with leaders from the U.S., Japan, and China during his visits. His team is also coordinating a meeting with President-elect Donald Trump.

Kim Tae Hyo, the first deputy director of the National Security Office, briefed the media at the Yongsan Presidential Office on Tuesday. He announced that Yoon will visit Lima, Peru (APEC), and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (G20) from November 14 to 21. First Lady Kim Keon Hee will not accompany him.

During his visit to Peru from November 14 to November 18, Yoon plans to discuss inclusive economic growth, support for vulnerable groups, and creating a free and stable trade and investment environment with APEC member countries. As the chair country for next year’s APEC summit, he will also emphasize South Korea’s role in energy transition and food security. He will hold a summit with the current chair country, Peru, and sign multiple memorandums of understanding (MOUs) in defense, minerals, and ICT.

Yoon will attend the G20 summit in Brazil on November 18, where he plans to deliver a message on strengthening international cooperation to overcome the climate crisis and transition to clean energy.

This meeting will also allow Yoon to talk with President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba of Japan, and President Xi Jinping of China. A senior official from the presidential office in Seoul mentioned that “the possibility of a successful China-South Korea summit is high.”

The overseas trip will also be a chance to coordinate a meeting with Trump. A senior official from the presidential office confirmed, “It is true that we are maintaining close communication with Trump’s team.”
