On Monday, China’s Foreign Ministry released a statement highlighting the remarks made by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during his talks with Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel in Beijing.

Wang highlighted the enduring partnership between China and Luxembourg, noting that Luxembourg has been a crucial ally for China for over fifty years, a relationship characterized by mutual respect, equality, and beneficial cooperation. He pointed out that this successful cooperation is particularly significant given global instability.

Wang emphasized the importance of dialogue over confrontation and openness over isolation. He advocated for connectivity and against decoupling, arguing that these principles are essential for promoting joint development and addressing global challenges effectively.

He also mentioned that the upcoming year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union. He described China and Europe as partners rather than competitors, urging both sides to respect and consider each other’s positions to foster cooperation. Wang expressed his hope that the EU would remain committed to its strategic autonomy, especially in the current climate of increasing unilateralism and protectionism. He affirmed China’s readiness to work with Luxembourg to support sustainable and positive development in China-EU relations.

In response, Bettel emphasized Luxembourg’s commitment to economic development through openness, inclusiveness, and innovation. He stated Luxembourg’s opposition to bloc confrontations and its aim to build mutual trust and understanding through cooperation, partnership, and honest communication. He believed these approaches are the keys to finding solutions that benefit all countries. As a founding member of the EU, Luxembourg is dedicated to enhancing the mutual trust and partnership between China and Europe.

The two sides also exchanged views on other international and regional issues of mutual interest. According to diplomatic sources in Beijing, China’s proactive outreach built rapport. China may be securing allies to respond effectively to Donald Trump’s possible second term.
