Apple’s Big Reveal: What’s Leaving and What’s New?

Apple website

Apple has announced its new iPhone event. They unveiled the iPhone 16, new AirPods, and updated Apple Watch models at this event. Reports from 9to5Mac suggest that Apple might also phase out several existing products.

iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max

Apple has a tradition of selling flagship iPhones for just one year before discontinuing them, a trend dating back to the iPhone XS and XR released in 2018. This strategy often reflects the similarity between successive models, aiming to push customers towards more affordable entry-level iPhones. Consequently, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, notable for introducing titanium to the iPhone lineup, will likely be discontinued. These could also be the last Pro models featuring the 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screens.

iPhone 14 Plus

Introduced as Apple’s first large entry-level iPhone, the iPhone 14 Plus filled the gap the underperforming mini models left. Its 6.7-inch display and long battery life offer a more budget-friendly alternative to the Pro Max. Given its similarity to the iPhone 13 mini, discontinued last year, the iPhone 14 Plus may also face discontinuation. However, the iPhone 14 might see slightly better sales than its predecessor.

iPhone 13

Launched in 2021, the iPhone 13 offered improvements in battery life, a new camera system, and a smaller notch. After several price drops, it is currently available for $599. However, the iPhone 14 is expected to take place after three years. The iPhone 14 may maintain this price point until the release of the iPhone SE 4.

Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2, SE 2

Apple is also expected to refresh its entire Apple Watch lineup, including the Series 10, Ultra 3, and SE 3. The Series 10 now features a larger display, a thinner case, and a new chipset. The currently available Series 9, Ultra 2, and SE 2 models will likely be discontinued.

AirPods 2, AirPods 3

Apple has sold the AirPods 2 as its entry-level model since 2019, while the AirPods 3, released in 2021, introduced spatial audio features and improved sound quality. However, with two new AirPods 4 models on the horizon, both AirPods 2 and 3 are expected to be discontinued. The newly launched AirPods 4 will include a mid-range option with noise-canceling features and an entry-level model.

FineWoven Case

Apple introduced the FineWoven case with the iPhone 15 as an environmentally friendly alternative to leather but faced significant criticism due to durability issues. Recent rumors suggest that Apple is likely to introduce a new material to replace this case with the launch of the iPhone 16.
