Casino Fever: 80% of Thais Support Legalizing Casinos for Tourism Boost

theguru Views

The Thai government is one step forward with casino legalization to boost tourism.

The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy reported that Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced the legalization of casinos, which was backed by strong national support.

A recent online public hearing revealed that 80% of participants agreed with the proposal to develop entertainment complexes, including casinos.

Thailand’s Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat expressed that the government plans to adjust key legislation based on public feedback and will discuss it with coalition partners before seeking cabinet approval.

Past attempts to legalize casinos faced backlash from conservatives. However, the current government believes such a change will create jobs, increase national revenue, and attract more tourists.

Earlier this March, the Thai House of Representatives approved a special committee report for large-scale entertainment complexes with casinos, hotels, shopping malls, and amusement parks. The Finance Ministry is currently drafting a bill for casino legalization.

Tourism accounts for 20% of Thailand’s GDP. However, the economy has significantly contracted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing the government to take various measures to revitalize the tourism industry.
