Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has announced that the monthly user count for his social media platform Threads is rapidly gaining ground on Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter).

According to CNBC reports, Zuckerberg announced on Wednesday that Threads had reached 275 million monthly active users (MAU) as of the third quarter of this year. The number reflects a substantial increase of 100 million users from the second quarter’s 175 million and a remarkable annual growth of 175% from the 100 million users last year.

Zuckerberg disclosed that Threads is attracting over a million new users daily. He enthusiastically stated, “We’ve been just pleased with the growth trajectory and again, are really focused on introducing features that the community finds valuable.”

Threads was launched in July last year as a direct competitor to X. While X currently maintains a larger user base, the gap is narrowing quickly. Market research firm Sensor Tower reports that X’s monthly active users have dropped to 318 million, a 24% decline since Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in October 2022.

CNBC highlighted Threads’ significant contribution to Meta’s advertising revenue. Analysts suggest that Threads has successfully capitalized on X’s exodus of users and advertisers following Musk’s controversial mass layoffs post-acquisition.

Meta’s stock price closed down 4% on October 31.
