In the case of the 3 Series, it is the representative model of the BMW sedan lineup and a textbook for the D segment. The current 7th generation model has been on the market for 7 years, and expectations for the next-generation new model are rising. However, in the case of this new model, there is as much concern as expectations. This is because not only is the driving performance and perfection lacking, but a major change in design is also expected.

The changes in BMW’s family look have been quite shocking. A representative example is the extra-large kidney grille applied to the 7 Series following the SUV lineup. The 3 Series will not follow the same design, but it is known to be based on the electric concept car Vision Neue Klasse. This applies to both the electric i3 and the internal combustion engine models. Recently, a realistic rendering has been released, drawing attention.

Neue Klasse + Spy shot
Expected to be no different from the real thing

BMW specialized media, the BMW Blog, published a predicted image of the 8th generation (G50) 3 Series on December 9. This rendering was created based on the latest spy shots, and realistic details stand out. Let’s take a look at the spy shots first. The proportions of a traditional sedan and the long front fender line characteristic of rear-wheel drive stand out. In the case of the front design, the headlamps and grille area are connected, confirming the unique look of the Vision Neue Klasse.

Other details are difficult to confirm because they are covered in camouflage film, but the new 3 Series’s appearance in the rendering is not likely to be much different from the real thing. The prototype vehicle was equipped with temporary headlamp parts, but the expected drawing’s diagonal daytime running lights (DRL) will be applied. The deep curve starts from the gap in the center of the kidney grille, which contains the emblem, and continues to the center of the bonnet.

Tail lamp design that will divide opinions
The muffler tip proudly revealed

On the rear side, the design elements of the Vision Neue Klasse are faithfully reflected. The tail lamps, which extend from the rear quarter panel to the trunk, leaving only the emblem part, are likely to be a matter of preference. The diagonal and angled rectangular details are unique, and whether they can be applied to the actual vehicle is worth noting.

The trunk lid has a lip spoiler that is not on the concept car. However, since the rendering assumes the high-performance M350, the spoiler will likely be omitted from the basic model. The lower part of the bumper is coated in high-gloss black. The boldly displayed quad muffler tips emphasize that the vehicle is an internal combustion engine vehicle.

EVs and platform differentiation
Likely to be launched late next year

Meanwhile, the new 3 Series will somewhat reflect the Neue Klasse design, but the platform will use the CLAR as before. The electric model, the i3, will be developed based on the Neue Klasse platform. As for the new 3 Series internal combustion engine will likely maintain the current 2.0L 4-cylinder and 3.0L inline 6-cylinder engine lineups. The industry expects the launch of the latest model to be as early as the end of next year.
