As New York City prepares to implement congestion pricing in the new year, Lyft has announced a plan to offer discount credits to its riders.

On Saturday, Lyft revealed that it will provide credits to passengers who pay fares during the first month of the new pricing system.

The company explained that while its customers will face the same charges as other travelers, they can recoup some costs through credits redeemable on Lyft or Citi Bike the following week throughout January.

Lyft also clarified that this new fee will be added to the $2.75 congestion charge for rides that begin, end, or pass through Manhattan below 96th Street.

Despite ongoing efforts to reduce overall ride costs, the company described this credit initiative as a modest gesture to help riders adjust to the additional expense.

Last June, Governor Kathy Hochul briefly suspended New York’s congestion pricing program to alleviate lower Manhattan traffic while generating public transit funds. The program was then reintroduced at a reduced rate.

The pricing structure varies by time of day. During daytime hours, drivers of standard vehicles in Manhattan below 60th Street face a $9 fee.

In contrast, users of ride-hailing services like Uber or Lyft will be charged a $1.50 surcharge per trip.
