Inside EV reported Monday that Uber and Lyft are preparing to deploy robotaxis in some US cities this year. They are reportedly introducing new app features and building the necessary infrastructure.

Automakers, tech giants, and ride-hailing services are now betting big on robotaxis. They believe that autonomous vehicles have the potential to reduce accidents caused by human error, lower labor costs, and increase profits in the long term.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Uber has partnered with Waymo to deploy self-driving Jaguar vehicles in Austin, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia; Lyft has partnered with startup May Mobility, AV tech company Mobileye, and dash-cam company Nexar to deploy robotaxis in Atlanta. Uber is also reportedly looking for places where its vehicles can idle.

However, robotaxis still need to overcome safety, public trust, and logistics issues. Attention is focused on how Uber and Lyft will overcome these problems.
