A barefoot passenger on a plane has sparked a heated debate among netizens. The New York Post and The Mirror reported on June 1st about a video that has surpassed 10 million views on TikTok. The video shows a man sitting in an airplane seat, revealing his hairy bare feet. Next to the man were his socks and sneakers, but he was not wearing any slippers or sandals. The man in the video drew attention not only for his bare feet but also for having six toes.
He appears to have polydactyly, a condition commonly referred to as having extra fingers or toes. Polydactyly occurs in 1 out of 1000 people. The video quickly spread with online users showing varied reactions. Many criticized the barefoot passenger, saying, “Taking off your socks is crazy,” “If I saw bare feet, I would leave the plane,” and “Why would anyone leave their bare feet out?”
Comments about the man’s feet were also diverse. Some remarked, “He’s making a victory sign,” “He should pay extra for the extra toes,” “It’s like a four-leaf clover, let’s make a wish,” “Nice hairstyle,” and “It looks like a mermaid tail,” garnering many likes.
A minority opinion was, “This is the only barefoot boarding I can understand. His feet must hurt from constantly rubbing against his shoes”. This was followed by comments such as, “It must be uncomfortable to wear shoes, but he should at least bring slippers”. Many foreign airlines do not allow barefoot boarding unless there is a special reason, and can refuse boarding. In Korea, the in-flight travel guide of Korean Air states, “Taking off your socks can cause discomfort to others”. The in-flight etiquette of the Korea Airports Corporation advises, “It is inappropriate to take off your socks”.
