Tesla Crash in France Claims Four Lives, Safety Fears Escalate Globally

Yonhap News

As concerns about the safety of Tesla EVs continue to grow internationally, a Tesla electric car caught fire in France for unknown reasons, leading to the deaths of four people, further fueling concerns.

According to reports from AFP and other news outlets, local police stated that at around 10:45 PM on Saturday, October 12, a Tesla electric vehicle traveling at high speed crashed into a road sign in the western French city of Niort.

The accident resulted in the deaths of four people, including the driver, who was a restaurant employee.

A local judge mentioned in an interview with AFP that an investigation had been initiated to determine the cause and circumstances of the fatal accident and that an expert analysis of the vehicle was expected to take place.

This is not the first time Tesla has faced safety issues. In 2018, a driver in California died after crashing into a central divider while using Tesla’s Autopilot.

Following that incident, Tesla recalled over 2 million vehicles sold in the U.S. and Canada due to increased collision risks.

The controversy over Tesla’s safety is also heating up in South Korea.

Gyeonggi Province Fire Disaster Headquarters

On October 10, a Tesla driver crashed into a curb while driving in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province. The vehicle caught fire, resulting in the driver’s death.

The body was found in the back seat, not the driver’s seat and police are investigating whether the fire caused the power to be cut off, preventing the doors from opening.

According to the Kaizuyu Data Research Institute, which uses statistics from South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, Tesla’s domestic sales from January to September this year were recorded at 23,617 units. This figure marks a 161% increase compared to the same period last year when 9,047 units were sold.
