Tesla vs. Customer: Chinese Court Sides with Automaker Over Brake Failure Allegations

TechCrunch reported that Tesla won a defamation lawsuit against a female customer in China on Wednesday.

According to an AP investigation, a Chinese woman named Zhang Yazhou claimed her Tesla Model 3 experienced a brake failure that caused an accident. This prompted her to sue Tesla in February 2021.

However, Tesla responded by releasing the vehicle’s telemetry data and claiming that the brakes functioned normally. The company subsequently filed a defamation lawsuit against Zhang.

Recently, a Chinese court ruled in favor of Tesla and ordered Zhang to pay approximately $23,000 in damages and issue a public apology. Zhang is reportedly appealing the court’s decision.

The AP also noted that during the same period, out of 81 lawsuits filed by Tesla owners against the company regarding safety, quality, and contractual issues, only 9 resulted in favorable judgments for the owners.

Meanwhile, Tesla has also filed lawsuits against at least six bloggers who wrote critically about the company and two Chinese media outlets.
