Home Alone Surprise: Kevin McCallister’s Family Revealed as Top 1% Wealth Holders

tvreport Views

[TV Report=Lee Ye-eun Reporter] How wealthy was the McCallister family in the movie ‘Home Alone’?

The New York Times answered this question, which has been debated for nearly 30 years, on the 20th (local time). According to the report, the McCallister family is among the top 1% of the wealthy class.

The New York Times sought advice from economists and related production staff to find the answer.

First, there are lines in the movie implying that the McCallister family is wealthy. It can be understood from a scene where Harry and Marv the pair of thieves say that a wealthy neighborhood is the target for their burglary. The fact that the protagonist Kevin lives in a wealthy neighborhood can be inferred from their line, “Yeah, that’s it. That house will be a goldmine.”

According to a real estate website the McCallister family’s residence is in a suburb of Chicago which is considered a wealthy neighborhood in the United States.

Several economists have determined that an income of $305,000 (approximately 397 million Korean won) based on the 1990s standard would be needed to live in the McCallister family’s home. As of 2022, it would have to be $730,000 (approximately 951 million Korean won). In other words, only the top 1% of wealth holders in Chicago qualify to live in such a house.

Meanwhile ‘Home Alone’ a masterpiece released in 1990 is still loved as a Christmas movie even after 30 years. The film depicts a thrilling confrontation between 8-year-old Kevin McCallister (played by Macaulay Culkin) who is left alone in an empty house after his family leaves and a pair of thieves.
