Although it has not been broadcast on TV since 2002, the Miss Korea Pageant was a national program that families would watch, betting on how far their favorite contestants would go up until the 1990s.

As the pageant drew attention, there were various prejudices about Miss Korea. One of the assumptions was that they were beauty over brains.

Today, we introduce you to two representative high-achieving Miss Koreas who broke this stereotype, Geum Nana and Seo Hyun Jin.

Multi-talented announcer Seo Hyun Jin

After attending Seoul Arts High School, Seo Hyun Jin majored in Korean Dance at Ewha Womans University.

With her slender physique, small face, and charming round eyes, it was a hot topic when she revealed that she had gone on 221 blind dates during her college years.

She won the Miss Korea pageant in 2001. The same year, she won the Best Dresser award at the Miss World pageant.

Seo Hyun Jin joined MBC as an announcer in 2004. She left a strong impression on viewers through programs such as “MBC Movie Trip” and “Extreme Surprise” and served as the weekend anchorwoman for MBC’s flagship news program for a year from March 2006.

In 2007, she appeared on the “Neverending Story” educational program and developed an interest in journalism. As a result, she went to the US in 2010 to study journalism at UC Berkeley and earned a master’s degree.

She then resigned from MBC in 2014 and has worked as a freelance announcer. She has hosted programs on Seoul Economy TV, “Seo Hyeon Jin’s Hit People,” and TVN’s “Collaboration Talk Show Red Chair,” among others.

The standard of the high-achieving daughter, Geum Nana

Geum Nana, crowned Miss Korea Jin in 2002, is also super talented.

It was already well known that Geum Nana was a genius. At the time of the competition, she studied at Kyungpook National University’s School of Medicine.

She revealed on various shows that during college, her father suggested she compete in the Miss Korea pageant after losing 22 pounds she had gained while preparing for college entrance exams at a science high school.

She said she decided to apply because she thought it would be a fun experience after working hard on her diet, but she never dreamed she would be crowned Jin (first place).

After being crowned as the winner, Geum Nana quit medical school and studied abroad. MIT was the first school to contact her, followed by Harvard.

She studied biology at Harvard as a scholarship student. She then went on to earn a master’s degree in nutrition from Columbia University and a doctorate in nutrition and epidemiology from Harvard School of Public Health.

In September 2017, she was appointed as a professor in the Food and Life Science Department at Dongguk University, where she continues teaching students. From a medical student to Miss Korea Jin, a Harvard scholarship student and now a professor, her specs are truly jaw-dropping.

Seo Hyun Jin and Geum Nana’s Undying Passion

Seo Hyun Jin, a freelance announcer, revealed that she also works as a yoga instructor.

Seo Hyun Jin said, “The life of an announcer is constantly tense and requires a lot of energy, so I tend to lose my temper and become sensitive. I like yoga because it helps me to mature and express my younger self better.”

Seo Hyun Jin appeared on a broadcast last December to chat about personality clashes with her doctor husband, and she consistently shows her love for yoga on social media. She shows a passionate side of herself that doesn’t miss out on either life as a broadcaster or yoga instructor.

Meanwhile, in November, Professor Geum Nana, currently serving as the principal of Dongguk University’s Science Talent Education Institute, was appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador for the Organ Donation Sharing Life Practice Headquarters.

Geum Nana, who dreamed of attending medical school after graduating from Harvard, said, “After failing to get into medical school, I looked for a new career path. I realized that saving lives is not the only way to save lives. It is also meaningful to donate organs.” She plans to participate in various activities, including campaigns, to spread the value of organ donation.

We applaud the undying passion of Seo Hyun Jin and Geum Nana, who are beautiful as Miss Korea alumnae and intelligent. We look forward to their future endeavors.
