New Emotions on the Block: ‘Inside Out 2’ Explores Teen Angst

joynews24 Views

Director Kelsey Mann of Inside Out 2 has revealed the planning process of the film.

Inside Out 2 is an animated movie that deals with the crisis and adventure that ensues when unfamiliar emotions like Anxiety, Panic, Boredom, and Envy suddenly appear in the emotion control headquarters of 13-year-old Riley’s mind, shattering her peaceful daily life.

Gathering anticipation with the fresh concept of new emotions within Riley, who has entered puberty, along with the existing emotions of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear, Director Kelsey Mann of Inside Out 2 shared the ideation and planning process that became the starting point of the movie.

Mann shared that after extensive research on the changes occurring in the brains of teenagers, he came up with the idea of workers demolishing the emotion control headquarters and expanded the story from there.

Mann said, “I thought of an idea where a wrecking ball, a large tool used for building demolition, comes into the emotion control headquarters, and workers swarm in and start smashing everything. Becoming a teenager is like undergoing a remodeling project.”

Mann chose Anxiety as the main emotion of the complex emotions that arise during puberty. He explained that he chose Anxiety as the main emotion because it is a representative emotion that people encounter when they become teenagers, and it can elicit understanding and empathy from most people.

Additionally, Mann noted, “Anxiety was a part of this story from the beginning, but considering the impact of the past few years on all of us, especially teenagers, it felt like the right time to talk about the emotion of Anxiety.” He revealed that he made an effort to create a story based on the emotion of Anxiety, which everyone, especially those who have experienced the pandemic, can deeply empathize with.

By observing his childhood experiences as well as his 15 and 16-year-old children who are currently going through puberty, Mann enhanced the details of the story of Inside Out 2. With its unique ideas and emotions that everyone can feel, the movie is gathering anticipation as a story everyone can relate to. Inside Out 2 will be released on June 12th.
