A woman in her 50s survived for about an hour in a car that fell into a reservoir due to her lack of driving skills, thanks to a clever tactic.

According to the Gyeongsan Fire Station in North Gyeongsang Province on the 24th, a report was received at 7:14 AM on the 23rd that a car is sinking in the Hoegok Reservoir in Yongseong-myeon, Gyeongsan City.

When the fire department arrived at the scene, the accident vehicle had already completely sunk and was not visible.

Rescue workers wearing diving equipment went underwater and found the vehicle submerged at a depth of 16.4 feet (5m), rescuing the 50-year-old female driver, Ms. A.

According to the fire department, it took about an hour from receiving the report to the rescue.

Ms. A could survive in a car completely submerged in the water for a full hour thanks to an ‘air pocket.’

Professor Choi Young-sang of the Fire and Safety Management Department at Daegu Health College explained to the Chosun Ilbo on the 24th, “If the water depth is less than 32.8 feet(10m), the water pressure is not enough to compress the air inside the car, so an air pocket is formed.”

Assuming the interior height of the car is about 3.2 feet(1m), an air pocket forms in nearly half of the space at a depth of about 16.4 feet(5m).

A fire department official said, “It was a crash due to poor driving, and there were no passengers other than herself,” and “After being rescued, Ms. A was in a state of mild hypothermia but otherwise had no life-threatening conditions.”

Netizens who heard this news reacted, “She must have saved the country in her previous life. Do a lot of good in the rest of your life,” “The lady went to the palace of the dragon king and came back,” “I’m grateful for the woman’s courage and patience in enduring and overcoming for an hour,” “It’s amazing considering she could have panicked,” “Her survival skills are awesome,” and more.

Last year, two missing residents also survived in an air pocket in the basement parking lot of an apartment in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, severely damaged by Typhoon No. 11 ‘Hinamno.’
