Revealing abuse at a private animal shelter

Horrifying deeds of an animal shelter located in Icheon have been exposed.

The shelter was caught secretly selling over 100 dogs entrusted to them to a company for illegal burial.

According to reports from Yonhap News and other media outlets on the 14th, the Yeojoo Police Station in Gyeonggi Province arrested and transferred two people, including the owner of the private animal shelter in Icheon, a 30-something identified as Mr. A, and three others, including a 30-something disposal worker identified as Mr. B, on charges of violating the Animal Protection Law. Seven employees were also indicted without detention on the same charges.

Mr. A and others are accused of handing over 118 dogs from the shelter to disposal worker Mr. B for 100,000 to 300,000 won (approximately $85 to $255) per dog for euthanasia from December of last year to April of this year.

Mr. B is accused of burying the dogs he received on his land in Jangam-ri, Buknae-myeon, Yeojoo City.

The illegally buried dog corpses were first discovered in April. It was reported that the animal protection group Life reported to the police after witnessing the horrific scene.

The scene at the time of discovery was gruesome. The dogs were shallowly buried near a ditch, with some bodies exposed. They appeared to be emaciated, suggesting they had not been properly fed.

The autopsy results from the National Forensic Service were shocking. The dogs were found to have been primarily killed by blunt force trauma to the head, suffocation, or malnutrition, according to media reports.

The police investigated landowner Mr. B and confirmed that Mr. A and others had commissioned the disposal of pets. As a result of the investigation, Mr. A was found to have posted recruitment ads online offering to care for pets that owners could no longer keep due to circumstances and charged the pet owners between 1 million and 6 million won (approximately $850 to $5,100) per pet.

Subsequently, Mr. A’s company carried out a meticulous plan to deceive.

After receiving the pets, they would show the pets staying at the shelter for at least 30 days to the owners, and then the period of public display would be extended depending on the contract amount. It was revealed that Mr. A primarily operated the company by handing over dogs to Mr. B for euthanasia after their public display period had ended.
