How much time do Koreans spend on YouTube?
A recent study revealed that the average monthly usage time per user in South Korea exceeds 40 hours.
Wiseapp·Retail·Goods (Hereinafter, WiseApp), an application and retail analysis service, recently announced its analysis of the changes in YouTube app usage time, according to Yonhap News.
Based on their survey of domestic users on both Android (Google) and iOS (Apple), the two major smartphone operating systems, YouTube app usage time in January set a record at 111.9 billion minutes. This is a 2.2-fold increase in the last five years from 51.9 billion minutes in January 2019.
The average monthly usage time per user also doubled from 21 hours to 40 hours in the same period. WiseApp stated that it was the first time in January that the average monthly usage time per user exceeded 40 hours.
YouTube has been considered the most popular video platform. WiseApp explained that YouTube became the mobile platform with the highest usage in South Korea in December last year. YouTube Shorts, which was launched in July 2021, is considered a powerful factor in attracting younger users.
According to mobile index data from the mobile big data platform company IGAWorks, YouTube had the highest number of Monthly Active Users (MAU) in December last year, with 45.65 million users. YouTube surpassed KakaoTalk (45.54 million) for the first time. MAU refers to the number of users who have used the service at least once in the corresponding month.
YouTube recorded the highest usage among domestic mobile platforms for three consecutive months in January (45.47 million) and February (45.50 million) this year.
