The iconic Ford F-150 pickup truck has been dethroned as America’s best-selling vehicle, losing its top spot to the Toyota RAV4 last year.

Ford F-150 sales dipped to 460,915 units, marking a 5% decrease, while Toyota’s RAV4 saw a 9% increase, moving 474,193 units.

The Ford F-150 had maintained its reign as the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. for an impressive forty-seven-year streak. Since introducing the first F-Series, over forty-one million units have been sold in 77 years. Cementing its status as the quintessential North American pickup truck.

A shift in consumer preferences, particularly among younger Americans who favor SUVs, seems to have contributed to the F-150’s slip from the top spot. The popularity of hybrid powertrains in Toyota models has significantly boosted sales. Consumers gravitate towards Toyota during this transitional period from fuel- to electric-powered vehicles.

While the RAV4 has long been the best-selling SUV in the U.S., it has consistently trailed the F-150 in overall sales. Industry analysts suggest this shift could signal a gradual decline in pickup truck popularity.

Following the F-150 and RAV4, the sales rankings are as follows: Tesla Model Y is third with 372,613 units; Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is fourth with 344,022 units; Toyota Camry is sixth with 309,875 units; Toyota Corolla is seventh with 283,098 units, Nissan Rogue is eighth with 245,724 units, Honda Civic is ninth with 242,005 units, and GMC Sierra rounds out the top ten with 216,248 units sold.

Hyundai Motor Group achieved record sales in North America last year, with the Tucson (206,126 units sold) narrowly missing the top 10, landing in 11th place.
