Former US President Jimmy Carter is within sight of making history yet again, as his upcoming birthday on October 1 will make him the first US president to witness his 100th birthday. As Carter is currently in hospice care, all eyes are on the odds of him reaching this new history.
Defying the odds
Statistically, less than 1 percent of Americans live to be 100 years old. Carter faces particularly significant challenges in reaching this milestone as he’s been in hospice, end-of-life care, since February 2023. Half of people in hospice died within 17 days in 2020, according to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. However, Carter is proving an exceptional case in the medical field, surpassing 16 months in hospice care.
Maintaining good health
According to Carter’s family and friends, his health is relatively stable. He still maintains a good appetite and enjoys meals made from fresh vegetables grown on his hometown farm. He also shows clear cognitive consciousness, recognizing people around him and smiling at them.
Global support
As Carter nears his 100th milestone, global support and interest have intensified. A website that counts down the days to his birthday has appeared. Hundreds of visitors have left supportive messages on the site. Meanwhile, another website bets on whether Carter will reach 100 years old.
Upcoming commemorative events
Further, the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum is organizing a special film festival to commemorate Carter’s 100th birthday. In line with the tradition of setting the admission fee according to his age, it plans to raise the current fee of 99 cents to $1.
