If You Had One of These, Congratulations, You’re An Old Fart Now

Daniel Kim Views

In an era of technology, it seems quite difficult to take our eyes off of our phones. Sometimes we forget that we once lived in a time where we weren’t so dependent on technology and enjoyed playing outside and getting dirty in the sand with our friends.

Let’s take a blast to the past and look at items that were must-haves back in the 80s and 90s.

Rotary Phones

To make a phone call, you had to precisely place your finger in the correct hole for the number and turn it all the way around. Otherwise, you might end up calling the wrong person.

Analog TV

Back then, you had to turn the dial to change the channel or adjust the volume. There were no remote controls back then so you had to get up, walk to the TV, and walk back to wherever you were sitting.

VHS Tapes

Before DVD players, we had to use VCRs. We couldn’t rewind or fast forward with the touch of the button either. There were VHS rewinders that we had to use to rewind to the beginning or take an educated guess on when to stop the rewinder so we could start at a certain point. You had to pop it into the rewinder, stop when you felt like it was there, pop it back into the VCR, and if it wasn’t at the starting point you wanted, you would have to repeat the process until you got there.

Phone Books

Not a contact list on your smartphone, but a thick book filled with phone numbers. It listed people’s phone numbers alphabetically by region. We used it to look up the names of our parents or other acquaintances. If you were mischievous, this phone book would have been your best friend for prank calls.

Ashtray

The 80s and 90s were rough, so a lot of people smoked. It was quite common to have ashtrays in the house as most adults smoked inside and not outside back then.

Portable Cassette Player

Cassette players were a coveted item for all students, though it wasn’t easy to acquire. We often begged friends who had one to let us use it just once.
