Feeling Hungrier This Fall? Here’s Why It’s Totally Normal!

wikitree Views

Fall is often described as the season of “cheonggo-mabi” in South Korea, meaning “the sky is high and the horses are fat.” This saying captures how cooler weather increases our appetites, often leading to weight gain. But why does our appetite spike in the fall? Let’s explore the reasons behind this phenomenon.

As the days get shorter in the fall, it’s not just the temperature that drops—your serotonin levels take a hit, too. According to the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the decrease in sunlight during autumn reduces serotonin production, and that dip can leave you feeling hungrier.

When serotonin levels are high, your appetite tends to shrink. But when they drop, your body starts craving more food, which explains why we often feel those intense snack attacks as the daylight fades.

It’s not just the lack of sun that causes this seasonal spike in hunger. Colder temperatures also play a role. The hypothalamus, the part of the brain that manages hunger signals, starts slacking a bit when it’s chilly, making it harder for your body to tell when you’re full.

So, what’s the secret to keeping these cravings in check? It’s all about balance. Skipping meals or cutting your calories too much can backfire, leading to binge eating.

Also, slow it down! Take your time when eating—aim for meals that last at least 20 minutes, and make sure you’re chewing well. And don’t forget to get outside for a bit of sunlight each day. Just 30 minutes of outdoor exercise can help boost your serotonin levels, naturally keeping your appetite in check.

Rather than fighting your cravings, satisfy them with smart choices. Reach for foods that naturally curb hunger and keep you feeling full. Here are three to add to your shopping list:

  1. Apples – They’re not just great for digestion and help keep you full longer, making them the perfect snack.
  2. Spinach – Packed with thylakoids (yeah, that’s a mouthful), spinach helps trigger the hormones that signal fullness, so you’ll feel satisfied sooner.
  3. Seaweed – This low-calorie, low-fat superfood is rich in fiber, promoting satiety while also delivering a dose of essential nutrients.
