On the first day of China’s Labor Day holiday, a highway in Guangdong Province collapsed, causing numerous casualties.

China Central Television (CCTV), a Chinese state-run media, reported on May 1 (local time) that a highway in Guangdong Province had collapsed, resulting in 24 deaths and 30 injuries.

According to the report, the highway in Dabu County, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, collapsed around 2:10 a.m. As a result, about 20 vehicles traveling through this section fell down a steep slope and were buried in earth and sand.

After the accident, Guangdong Province and Meizhou City set up a field rescue headquarters and put all their efforts into rescue operations, deploying over 500 personnel. The accident blocked traffic in both directions on the highway, causing traffic disruptions.

The length of the collapsed pavement was 58.7 feet, and the area was 1985.42 square feet. The exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined, but CCTV speculated that the continuous rain may have played a role. Previously, Guangdong Province had experienced heavy rain for several days starting from the 18th of last month, and on the 27th of last month, there were casualties due to a tornado.
