Pork Politics: China’s Latest Trade Move Against the EU

China announced on June 17 that it has launched an anti-dumping investigation into pork and pork by-products from the European Union (EU).

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has hinted at retaliatory measures, including countermeasures after the EU announced provisional measures to impose a tariff bomb on Chinese electric vehicles. 

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced on its website on the same day, “On June 6, the Ministry of Commerce received a formal anti-dumping investigation application submitted by the China Animal Husbandry Association on behalf of the domestic pork and pork byproduct industry,” adding, “We have decided to conduct an anti-dumping investigation on imported pork and pork byproducts originating from the EU starting on June 17.”

The Ministry noted that the investigation is expected to conclude on June 17, 2025, but may be extended by six months if there are special circumstances.

The EU announced a tariff bomb of up to 48% on Chinese electric vehicles on June 12. In response, Chinese state media mentioned the possibility of trade protection investigations targeting EU dairy products, pork, and cars as Chinese government retaliatory measures.
