Argentina in Deep Freeze: Animals Suffer as Cold Wave Continues for Five Days

Daniel Kim Views

Over the past few days, a cold wave has swept across Argentina, distressing animals such as ducks, foxes, and sheep.

According to local media outlets, including Clarin and Ámbito Financiero, on Sunday, the National Meteorological Service (SMN, Servicio Meteorológico Nacional) of Argentina issued cold wave alerts for 16 provinces nationwide, including Buenos Aires.

As the cold weather moves northward, red alerts have been issued in regions like Entre Rios, La Rioja, and Santa Fe due to the cold wave. Other areas have progressively been issued orange and yellow alerts.

Weather authorities have reported that this cold wave has persisted for five consecutive days. While Argentina typically does not experience sub-zero temperatures during winter, except in the southern regions close to Antarctica, the mercury has dipped below zero in some areas due to the unusual cold.

The extreme cold has affected both flora and fauna, and images of frozen animals have been shared on social media.

On the 9th, a duck with its wet feathers frozen was found in the town of Trenque Lauquen in Buenos Aires. Fortunately, a resident discovered and rescued the duck, but other ducks frozen in the water did not survive.

Furthermore, images of sheep with thick fur frozen and buried in the snow, foxes frozen solid on the ground, and cats walking on frozen swimming pools have been shared.

Plants exposed to frost have also frozen solid. As a result, Ámbito Financiero reported that the prices of bell peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, and tomatoes are skyrocketing.
