Real Reason Behind US Wildfires? More Than 100 Firefighters to Blame

A firefighter in California has been arrested for allegedly starting wildfires. On the 21st, local time, California fire authorities announced the arrest of Robert Hernandez, a 38-year-old fire apparatus engineer. Hernandez faces charges related to igniting fires five times between September 15 and October 14 in the hills and fields of Sonoma County, Northern California.

Sonoma County is located near the famous Napa Valley wine region, and authorities revealed that Hernandez committed these acts on his days off. However, the specific motive behind his actions remains unclear.

Fortunately, the wildfires started by Hernandez were contained before they spread beyond an acre each. A fire department representative credited quick responses from residents and firefighters with preventing the fires from causing significant damage.

Fire Chief Joe Tyler expressed his shock over the incident, stating, “I am appalled that one of our employees would betray the public’s trust and tarnish the dedicated efforts of nearly 12,000 colleagues.” This incident occurred amid an already difficult year for firefighters battling large wildfires that have plagued California. Meanwhile, CNN reported that more than 100 firefighters are arrested each year on arson charges, adding to the gravity of the situation.

Authorities are conducting further investigations into Hernandez and anticipate legal consequences. The case has also sparked renewed calls for a thorough review of the recruitment and management system in light of this incident.
