Amid escalating international tensions regarding North Korea’s potential troop deployment to Russia, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reportedly held discussions with Russian officials.
Yonhap News Agency reported on Wednesday that the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that Wang met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko in Beijing that same day.
While the ministry did not disclose specific details about their discussions on the Ukraine conflict, analysts suggest that North Korea’s troop deployment was likely a topic of conversation given the timing of the meeting.
Wang underscored the robust and independent nature of China-Russia relations, noting that their development follows an inevitable historical logic and is driven by strong internal momentum. He emphasized that these ties are unaffected by international changes, do not target any third country, and remain free from external interference.
“Under the leadership of the two heads of state, the China-Russia relations have maintained a sound momentum of development, which serves common interests of the people of both nations and allows them to make their respective contributions to safeguarding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter,” he added.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry cited Rudenko, noting that the two states’ relations are advancing rapidly and have reached a historical peak. He affirmed Russia’s commitment to working closely with China to implement the plans outlined by both nations’ leaders, maintain high-level exchanges, and strengthen cooperation on international and regional issues.
This high-level meeting has garnered attention due to growing international concerns over North Korea’s possible military cooperation with Russia, especially as South Korea, Ukraine, the United States, and NATO continue to highlight signs of North Korean troop deployments. Despite this, China claims it is not aware of the relevant situation and has refrained from taking a definitive stance.
