According to the Associated Press, the White House National Security Council (NSC) announced Wednesday that the two leaders will meet in Lima, Peru, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. This follows their first encounter in Bali, Indonesia, in November 2022 and a subsequent meeting in San Francisco in November 2023. The Lima meeting will mark their third summit.
A White House official expressed that Biden is deeply concerned about North Korea’s troop deployment in Russia’s war against Ukraine. The official further noted that the White House is growing increasingly worried about the long-term stability implications for both Europe and the Indo-Pacific region if North Korean forces begin combat operations alongside Russian troops.
Since their previous summit, Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping have progressed in several areas, including maintaining military communication channels and working together on drug eradication. However, an official mentioned that Biden is expected to raise concerns about China’s cyberattacks and reiterate that U.S. measures to counter China will persist. The official also noted that Biden would address issues of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait while expressing concerns over China’s aggressive actions.
