A Ukrainian military intelligence official reported that the deployment of North Korean troops in Russia’s Kursk region has had minimal impact on the ongoing conflict.

While acknowledging that the North Korean forces operate with tactics reminiscent of World War II, the official warned against underestimating their potential adaptability.

Yevgen Yerin, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian military intelligence service, told AFP on Tuesday that the involvement of North Korean forces in the fighting has not significantly impacted the situation, as the number of personnel is not substantial. He also noted that their experience with modern warfare is limited, particularly in drone operations, and their tactics are outdated, relying on strategies reminiscent of the World War II era.

“But they are also learning. And we cannot underestimate the enemy. And we can see they are already considering some things in their activities,” he added.

In August, Ukrainian forces advanced into the Russian-controlled Kursk region, capturing territory and engaging Russian troops.

Intelligence suggests that a significant number of North Korean troops sent to support Russia are stationed in Kursk. Reports estimate that North Korea has deployed over 10,000 soldiers to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with casualties ranging between 1,000 and 3,000.

Moscow and Pyongyang have remained silent regarding North Korea’s regional involvement.
