Donald Trump, the U.S. president-elect, once again called on Canada to merge with the United States, claiming it could resolve Canada’s problems. This follows Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement of his intention to resign.

On Monday, President-elect Trump commented on Trudeau’s resignation announcement through his social media platform, Truth Social, stating, “If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down.”

Trump also wrote, “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned.” He added, “They would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”

Since his election victory, Trump has demanded that Canada address trade imbalances and border security issues, even declaring that he would impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian imports. Following this, Prime Minister Trudeau visited Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, to find a solution. Still, no meaningful progress was made, leaving Trudeau with heavy domestic criticism.

Even after the meeting, Trump continued to pressure Canada to become the 51st state. Amid worsening economic instability, including the highest level of household debt among OECD countries, soaring housing prices, rising unemployment, and political unrest, Trudeau’s approval rating plummeted to 19%. His ruling Liberal Party also fell behind the opposition Conservative Party in support, deepening the political crisis.

Ultimately, during Monday’s press conference, Trudeau announced that he would step down as both party leader and prime minister after the party elects a new leader. As a result, the Canadian Parliament, scheduled to resume on January 27, will remain suspended until March 24 to allow the Liberal Party to elect its new leader.
