Symptoms of caffeine addiction
Be careful with your coffee intake
Drinking coffee in the morning clears your mind while drinking coffee in the afternoon gives your tired body energy. However, this is all due to your mood.
People who drink coffee like water should be cautious of caffeine addiction. When you consume excessive amounts of caffeine, you should not ignore the health signals that your body sends.
If you are a coffee enthusiast who enjoys coffee every day, you should check if you are already experiencing the health risks that require quitting coffee. The following are symptoms of caffeine addiction.
1. Headaches When You Skip Coffee
If you feel dizzy or lightheaded when you don’t drink coffee or have a headache that feels like your entire head is being squeezed, you should suspect caffeine addiction.
People who drink coffee almost daily on weekdays are likelier to experience these symptoms on weekends. If you disregard and leave them untreated, you may develop caffeine tolerance, where you need to drink coffee to get rid of headaches.
2. Upset Stomach Before Meals
One of the common symptoms that people who drink coffee on an empty stomach complain about. Feeling a stabbing pain in the chest area before and after meals is also due to caffeine addiction.
Some may feel like they have phlegm in their throat or experience frequent coughing even though they are not suffering from a cold. There may also be symptoms of a sticky and bitter taste in the mouth even after brushing teeth.
If left untreated, this can lead to stomach ulcers.
3. Trembling and Numbness
Excessive consumption of caffeine can cause muscle twitching without any apparent reason. Sudden eye twitching, drooping corners of the mouth, numb arms and legs, and leg cramps while sleeping can also be symptoms caused by the same reason.
To alleviate these symptoms, drinking plenty of water rather than coffee is important. If your body lacks hydration, muscle twitching can become more severe.
4. Extreme Fatigue on Rest Days
If you feel incredibly sluggish and your body feels weak to the point where you can’t move on weekends, this could also be due to caffeine addiction. It can be considered a kind of withdrawal symptom that occurs after caffeine leaves your body.
If you feel mentally alert, but the fatigue doesn’t go away, it is a sign that fatigue has accumulated in your body. In this case, you should make yourself comfortable by drinking warm tea or getting a good rest.
If these symptoms persist, you may even have insomnia, where you feel tired but can’t fall asleep.
5. Anxiety and Restlessness
If you feel anxious and restless after consuming coffee for a certain period, you should immediately stop drinking coffee.
Some people experience shaking arms and legs without any specific reason, or they feel restless and on the verge of vomiting. Caffeine blocks adenosine, which makes you feel tired, and stimulates adrenaline secretion to increase energy. However, excessive consumption can lead to anxiety and tension instead.
If you are taking medication for depression or anxiety disorders, you should be even more cautious about consuming coffee.
6. Dry, Gritty Eyes
If you feel a heavy and stiff sensation in your eyes, as if someone is pressing the inside of your eyes, or if your eyes feel dry when you wake up or in the evening, this can also be due to caffeine.
Caffeine, which also affects metabolism, causes immediate blood pressure elevation by constricting blood vessels. High blood pressure can lead to symptoms such as dry eyes and congestion.
If your blood circulation is not smooth, you may be more prone to experiencing these symptoms than others. Since it can even harm your eye health, you should refrain from consuming caffeine.
