① Enhancing hotel room security measures

Due to their job characteristics, airline cabin crew members frequently use hotels. Naturally, being frequent hotel guests, they know more about hotels than anyone else.

The flight attendant and influencer Kat Kamalani have caused a stir by releasing a video titled “Flight Attendant’s Hotel Usage Tips.” The video quickly garnered attention, recording 5.2 million views shortly after its release. In the video, Kamalani revealed that flight attendants never disclose their room numbers when staying at hotels. This is due to security reasons, and flight attendants often stay in rooms alone.
Kamalani also urged women who travel alone or use hotels to consider their security.

She advised that once inside the hotel room, one should double lock the door. Kamalani emphasized safety issues when using hotels.

Another flight attendant, Chichi, introduced a way to create a security device in a hotel room through TikTok. Chichi created a security device by hanging a small towel on the hotel door to prevent it from being forcibly opened. If there is a latch on the door, she advised to cover the latch with a towel and then lock the door.

This method is used because there is a possibility that someone outside the door can drill a hole in the door viewer and then use a wire and an endoscope camera to unlock the door. Such crimes have occurred in South Korea.

She also introduced a method of hanging a hanger on the top latch and then using another hanger to double-connect the hanger and the doorknob. Then she mentioned that carrying around a door alarm is a good idea.

② Why flight attendants roll a water bottle under the bed

Flight attendants mentioned the need to check if someone had entered their room. Not only Kat Kamalani but most flight attendants check under the bed, and the reason for this is shocking.

Esther, a flight attendant with KLM, the Dutch airline, introduced a way to check if someone had intruded into the room. She advised throwing a water bottle under the bed if you are scared of the shadows under the bed. No one is there if the bottle comes out on the other side. If the bottle does not appear on the other side, there is something under the bed, and you need to check what it is.

Esther revealed that one of her colleagues had a bad experience when she used the room without checking under the bed. Since then, checking under the bed has become mandatory for flight attendants.
She also warned that if the curtains in the room are open, you could become a target of crime. Since it can be assumed that no one is in the room, it is crucial always to close the curtains.

③ How to comfortably use a hotel room

Kat Kamalani also introduced ways to use a hotel room comfortably. Hotel beds usually come with pillows, a bed runner, and decorative cushions at the foot of the bed. She advised me to remove both the bed runner and the cushions before lying on the bed, as hotels often do not wash these items properly.

The bed runner is a type of bedding used in countries where people wear shoes indoors. It prevents the bed from getting dirty when people climb onto it with their shoes on. She advised me to check for bed bugs in the bedding. Kamalani explained that she checks for bed bugs by stripping off the mattress cover and checking the corners.

Bed bugs are likely to hide in mattress seams, zippers, and headboard gaps, so checking these areas carefully is essential. If you find blood stains or white eggs about 1mm in size, it may indicate the presence of bed bugs, and you should notify the staff. If bitten by bed bugs, red or white swollen marks can appear on the skin, and blisters or pustules may form.

She advised not to place your suitcase on the bed or sofa when entering the room. Suitcases are usually much dirtier than they appear, so putting them on the bed is not a good idea. Rooms usually have a designated place to put your suitcase, so it’s better to use that or place your suitcase on the floor.

If there is no iron in the room, you can hang clothes on a hanger in the bathroom while taking a hot shower. This will straighten out wrinkled clothes and remove creases. If you spray perfume or fabric deodorizer, it will feel like new clothes.
